Any Problems Caused by the Tariff Conflict

Thanks for the feedback. It seems that in the past when there were conflicts between China and different countries some portion of the public there always seemed to have spontaneous public protests against the other country, (Japan and France for example), It is good to hear that that hasn't happened in this case, at least not yet. Hopefully it won't since I will be making my annual pilgrimage soon to visit my wife's family for a few months.
  2. I travel to China every year to visit my wife's family and am curious if anyone has had any negative vibes from the locals about the tariff conflict?

    Buying baking items

Thanks Guys, I have already come and gone. Found most of the things at HZ Tower but overall found it quite expensive. Seems like healthy alternatives in processed items isn't high on the priority list in Hangzhou. Still managed to do OK. Will try BLT next trip.

    Buying baking items

Thanks for the info. I will be in China this Thursday. I will try some of the places you mentioned. I have looked in some of the large grocery stores during past trips but didn't find the items.

How do you drink YOUR water?

I spend abut 1-3 months per year in Hangzhou. Usually in a rented apartment,(hard to find for just a few months even if we offer to pay extra), or with my wife's mother. We have always got our water from the big bottles. They seem to be about equal to a 5 gallon bottle from the US. Maybe it's luck but I have never been sick from the water unless it's one of those hidden attacks that will show up 20 years later. Anyway, I will probably keep doing that as it is economical and doesn't taste bad to me.

    Come to learn Chinese!

Where are you located? I will be in Hangzhou for about a month starting 9-15-16 and would be interested in reviewing what little mandarin I know. I will be near Wener Lu where it changes to Chao Wang Lu. If I take lessons it would be for about one and a half hour per day 4 days a week. Let me know if you are interested and what your rates would be
  8. If Maya is gone where is the best place to go hangout, have a beer, and kill a little time without much effort to meet others. Just vegetate with my beer.

    Buying Baking Items

I posted this in the shopping section also because I wasn't sure of the best place. I am coming to Hangzhou in September for my annual business trip. I will travel a little for business but will spend almost a month in Hangzhou. I am looking to buy the following items for baking. I didn't find them in the regular stores last year. I would appreciate any suggestions. Whole wheat flour, oat Bran, and lentils. If anyone knows where I can buy them in Hangzhou I would appreciate the help.

    Is Sam's Club worth it?

I went to Sam's Club in Hangzhou a few days ago. They have a fairly decent selection of foreign products. The prices are about 2 to 2 1/2 times what you would pay in their country of origin. Expensive but if you want the original it might be worth it. You have to buy in volume just like in the US so be prepared to spend. I think unless you want larger quantities that Metro would be a better choice but Sam's does have a lot more US products. Like Metro they have imported beef. Membership is 150 rmb per year.

    Kindle e-reader in hangzhou

I have had a Kindle for a few years. I bought it in the US and I bring it to China with me everytime I come. I often stay for 2 to 4 months at a time. I have always been able to buy and download books from Amazon and just about any Starbucks I went to. Other places sometimes have a Wifi connection but not always. My Kindle has 3G technology which allows the WiFi connection. Good Luck

    Myth Cafe has CLOSED

My wife and I went to Myth Cafe yesterday for breakfast and just about everything on the menu had some missing items. We finally told them to just give us what they had. They said that since it was there last day they hadn't bought anything for the day and the only reason they were even open on Saturday was that they had some friend coming in to eat. Otherwise they would not have opened. We had the American Breakfast and the Burrito. Both were OK. The American Breakfast was less the bread. The burrito was wrapped in what appeared to be a crepe, not a tortilla. Either way were happy with the food. We will miss the relaxed atmosphere and the never know what you will actually get menu. Overall it is not a good thing to lose another lao wai friendly restaurant.

    burger king

I have been eating at another Burger King that I found near the intersection of Chaowang Road and Shaoxing Road. It is on the first floor at the rear when you enter the store to go to Century Mart. The service is average but the hamburgers appear to be better that the ones I got at the nearby McDonalds. In the US I usually don't go to either but when I do the burgers at McD's are better than KB's. Here it seems to be the opposite.

    Pancake Mix

LOL, Ding2go, I appreciate the effort but I just don't see myself ordering pancake mix over TaoBao. It looks like some of the shipping costs means it would be shipped for the US. Maybe some of the people selling pancake have a home based pancake mix store.
