  13. We are a school of contemporary capoeira, training and performing different styles of the art-form as well as associated dances. We offer beginner and intermediate level classes for adults. Capoeira is an art-form from Brazil that combines in its practice elements of martial arts, flow of movement, acrobatics & music. Capoeira is a perfect activity for outgoing people looking to improve strength, flexibility and coordination in a fun environment. Adult tryout class is free of charge! Location/Schedule Tuesdays-Thursdays, 8:00pm-9:30pm; Sunday class, 6:30pm-8pm. Address.: Guodu Commercial Building, room 2002. Fengqi rd. 361 (subway: Fengqi road, exit A1). 国都商务大厦2002室(凤起路361号) About us Capoeira Mandinga Hangzhou is a non‐profit affiliate school of Capoeira Mandinga, founded in 1984 in Oakland by Master Marcelo Pereira (known in capoeira circles as “Mestre Marcelo Caveirinha”). Capoeira in Hangzhou started in 2009 with a group called “Ventania”, and in 2015 the group became part of Capoeira Mandinga. At present we are the only school teaching and promoting capoeira in Hangzhou. Our mission is to raise awareness of capoeira as an effective martial art and rich art form, as well as to foster cultural dialogue, openness and friendship among our community of students and followers. In addition to training fighting techniques and related skills, we familiarize students with the historical and cultural context of Brazilian popular culture, which is inexorably tied to capoeira. We are committed to quality and therefore continue to study and research the history and development of capoeira, as well as diverse styles and philosophies that enrich the art form and students’ immersion in it. We encourage students to do their own research, formulate their own ideas, and develop their unique style in capoeira. Our trainings incorporate music, dance, movement drills, physical strengthening, among other skills. Capoeira Mandinga Hangzhou actively promotes Brazilian culture by engaging local and foreign communities through workshops and performances. Capoeira FAQ Q: What if I have never done capoeira before? A: You have to start somewhere? We start by teaching you the basic movements and you take it from there. Q: I have never taken any type of martial art or dance class. Can I still try capoeira? A: Capoeira does not require that you have prior experience on any type of physical activity! Q: What if I am not flexible or not in best physical condition? A: Don’t let this discourage you! Capoeira is for everyone!!! Young or old, short or tall, girl or boy! Of course, the more you train, the faster you will see results! Q: How long does it take to learn capoeira? A: Think of it as learning a new language. The more of the language you learn, the more clearly you can express yourself to others. If your goal is to have a conversation with someone that consists of, “Hi, how are you?” and “I am fine, thank you”, you should be able to do that within a month or two. If you plan to discuss world politics or philosophy, be prepared to spend more time learning the language. Q: What language are classes taught in? A: English, Chinese and Portuguese. Our instructors speak English and Chinese, and are assisted in translation where necessary by students in the class. The names of movements are taught in Portuguese, as well as song lyrics and other important tools for communication. Q: What should I wear? A: For your first class, comfortable workout wear is fine. Should you decide to sign-up, we have uniforms available for purchase. Q: Should I bring anything? A: Open mind and positive attitude! Bring a water bottle.

  19. SEARCH FOR SOUND offers a new interpretation of Chinese silent film Queen of Sports (1934) by uniting this classic with an all-new original score that will be played live by a talented group of musicians from Hangzhou and Shanghai. A young girl Lin Ying (masterfully portrayed by Lili Li) enrolls in a sports college in Shanghai, where she learns about sports and love. As she becomes a sports celebrity, she gets involved in the life of the upper class and gradually forgets the essence of sports. It was the breakout movie for actress Lily Li, one of the era’s biggest stars. Queen of Sports is a highly entertaining, unique and hilarious film that offers an invaluable glimpse into China’s largely lost silent film heritage. SEARCH FOR SOUND brings exciting new winds to Hangzhou’s event scene, it’s going to be a multimedia feast of old and new that will be pleasing both to your eyes and ears. It is definitely a unique event that is not to be missed. 21. Hello everyone...this is my second first post on the forums now I that I have officially moved and am settled in my apartment and ready to start meeting people. I will be studying at CAA on Nanshan lu...looks like there are quite a few students here, but mostly from Zhejiang University, is that right? Anyway, I am really into art, running, playing outside, coffee, live music. I think I am going to check out some of the running groups, but if anyone wants to check out a museum or go exploring, I'm your girl! Also, anyone know of any open mics? Or anyone into photography? I shoot film and would love to maybe set up a darkroom if there was interest. Or go on photowalk if digital is your thing. Cheers, Megan
  22. I brought a few pieces of art from the US and brought them sans frames. Is there a place around here that does custom matting and framing or someplace that would carry a variety of frames?
  23. Hello everyone! I arrived in Hangzhou about 3 months ago, and there is one thing I miss very much, its proper black&white film photography. I know a few labs around, but I'd rather do it myself, because I deeply enjoy the process and the control I have over it. Would anyone be interested in setting up a darkroom somewhere? I'm still pretty new so don't know anywhere we could do printing and processing, but I'm just throwing the idea out there, to see how many people would be interested. We could get the chemicals or anything needed off taobao for a good price, and for those who have never done it and want to learn, I'd happily teach!
  24. This may be a rather obviously teacherly preoccupation (busted!), but... I haven't yet found an art shop that sells posters. I'm interested in Western art, Asian art, movie posters, photography, portraits of famous people... anything, really! Does anyone have recommendations?
