New "possible" ZUST student

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am Julian from Germany. I am not exactly an Expat, but rather an exchange student.
My semester will start in late February and will end in July, supposedly. But since I've already found out about the excellent location of ZUST campus, I will need to come a bit earlier and get me some shared flat north/north-west of the westlake. That seems like the best tradeoff if I can buy an e-bike (correct me if I'm wrong).
Actually I was looking forward to going to China since I've been in Qingdao for a summer university in 2015. But month for month this whole thing coming closer to me makes me feel a bit unsure about the university. Maybe you give me some cheer-ups or tell me NOW about the big mistake I'm going to make  (Seoul's still an option)

I hope that little monologue did not look too crazy.

Take care!

Hi Julian.

Lots of KeJi students around - including on this board.

When looking for your accommodation, bear in mind your ability to get to uni - including in the rain and snow (granted, that latter is rare), and pollution  (unfortunately, not so rare!)

So, you may want to be closer to the uni... which is quite possible.

But, that will mean more expensive taxis when you go out at night (currently, about 70RMB from 'downtown' Lake area).

German? You can bring some german stuff to China, such as a helmet, mask... Sainthood rented a flat nearby, perhaps you can ask for a spare room, unless you cannot stand his loud snoring and his peeks from time to time.

ZUST is located in a remote place, no, my mistake, not remote anymore. Make sure you buy some wine, instead of beer, it's cheaper in China. Ebike is a must. Keep your pants tight all the time--got loose even for one second, you can contract STD.

Living in this biggest victim country of one German douchebag--Marx, I highly suggest you keep a low profile as you also come from there.

Thank you guys for your responses!

So how long would it take me from ZUST to the downtown area? I don't want to believe those schedules on Baidu that state over 2 hours for some 15 km by bus?!

Is life on campus good or do you miss the proximity to the city?

2hours?? WTF?

No. It's 45mins to Huang Long (bus terminal and near a few places). 1 hour to get to Wulin Square/ Hangzhou Tower. Wulin is only 10 mins to further 'downtown', or less by metro (and the metro station is 20 meters from the bus stop). It might be 2 hours is really bad peak hour traffic...Normal peak hour traffic will be 1:30.

I'm not on campus - I have a flat nearby. Price is much cheaper than closer to the city (where you're asking for), but I still have most things (though, it's a bit  further for shopping... fortunately, if you only do that once or twice a week, it's not a problem - cos it's on the bus route).

And, I'm not much of one for living in cities... I prefer to be closer to nature (and space... I'm an Aussie! Living in an apartment is cramped for me). But from my balcony, I can see hills and trees, and know I can be walking in those hills within 10 minutes (literally!)

I also don't drink a lot, and am not a socialite...

We have quite a few restaurants in the area, including a few that the rest of the city doesn't seem to have . There's an 'Indian' restaurant nearby (although, Chinese chef), and Uzbek/Turkish/. And a couple of other Arabic restaurants (goo, fairly inexpensive, food!!!)

Others on this forum will come on and tell you how bad it is out this way (cos they need that socialising thing. There aren't any good bars out here (nor good cafes... but then, there aren't any 'good' ones anywhere in HZ) We are 20 minutes from Sam's Club - one of the better supermarkets we can go to (like Aldi) - but it still sucks for cheese!!!!

Hey Julian,

I happen to know ZUST quite well. You'll find a lot exchange students from Germany there.

For accommodation, I suggest you find somewhere not far from the uni. Liuxia(留下) is not a bad choice, where the traffic is very convenient. 193\B7\310\B4 bus are all to downtown. by taking bus, only 10 minutes to campus, 35 minutes to Gudang(古荡) where I think is the downtown. A e-bike is necessary. But I heard the traffic department of Hangzhou are going to control the unqualified e-bike this year, so I suggest you buy one which could be registered.

ZUST located in Xiao he shan, a very beautiful area not like the downtown. the pollution there is the lowest. haha~

Hope you enjoy the life there!

It's a bad uni ,and a bad place dude. I was studying there and hated it,   but there are quite a lot of german students there so u might like it . Most of the teachers barely speak english, There s no activity on campus what so ever  and if u wanna go to club on a weekend -  1.40 hour drive by bus to wulin, otherwise taxi or smth. and also dont buy e bike if u gonna study in there. It;s pointless and almost 1 out of 3 ppl have it there so u ll have a ride any time.
