Arriving in Hangzhou in October

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone!

If everything goes as planned, my family and I will be arriving in Hangzhou in early October for a stay of 6-12 months. I have a million questions but will spend some time looking around the forum before I start asking, since I'm sure many of them have been asked and answered before. We are very excited and a bit nervous. I'm glad to have a place to learn what is in store.

Thanks. My husband's company is sending us. It will be my first time in China; he has traveled for business but never more than 2 weeks, so figuring out the logistics of actual daily life will be new for both of us. I am frantically trying to learn enough Chinese to not feel completely helpless.

OMGs... you're going to hate it here with that kind of attitude!

Get used to not being told what you NEED to know until it's too late, and no-one volunteering such information. This includes things that will take you hours or days (eg, going to the bank... could take 3 trips - each time for/with a different piece of paper that someone could have told you the first time.. but didn't!)

Just in case you don't find it in the forums... always carry those little packs of tissues with you.. they are very handy (especially in public toilets, that usually don't have toilet paper!)

Also, as much as there is lots of bitching, in-fighting, and passive-aggressive (sometimes without the 'passive') BS on this forum, your questions will get answered, and in general we're a friendly bunch :)

BE well!

LOL. I've already been warned I'm too polite and patient to live in China and I will need to become much more assertive!

hm, this is very interesting and could be a good topic for discussion :)

Welcome. And good luck. Since your stay has an endpoint it may very well be a good experience. You know it's nor permanent and have an exit to look forward to if you don't like your time here.

Theres no way to prepare to be honest. Just embrace the chaos, have no expectations and plan to bring things you must have for a 6-12 month stay and then do without  for all the other things you can live without and discover new ways to make do with what you find here whether it be clothes, furniture, medications, services, hobbies, entertainment, and food.

Get good insurance, find a language school right away once you get here if learning mandarin is a priority for you, don't waste any time as 6-12 months goes by very fast.

    • I know this is a really late reply. But I get my veg from Taobao. Including iceberg lettuce, those tiny little radishes,  fennel, and arugula/rocket. I've tried a few places on taobao, and they were all very good. They come in styrofoam packages with cooling packs in them.
