Canoeing / Kayaking Around Around Hangzhou

We have a few in the area who enjoy watersports - I know what some of you, especially the Brits, are thinking but no, its not that kind! - so I thought we'd start a thread for those of us who enjoy getting wet in the local streams & rivers in the surrounding countryside. Don't try this on any lakes or rivers in Hangzhou unless you want to be escorted off by the police.

This was yesterday's adventure down near Tonglu. :D

Looks like a great summer's day out!!!

I hope I'm there for the next trip to the water!

The main page was loading for half an hour, and I could only see one picture, but when I clicked the reply button, then I was able to see all the pics in the scrollable section below the reply box.

I'm not sure if that was a one off loading probable, or just a problem on my computer at that time, or if it's a problem with using offsite images.

On the funny photos thread I just attached a couple of small pictures using the file upload method. It seemed to work, and resized the pics well.

PS. I hope the water wasn't gray where you guys were paddling...

AFP article (16 July 2010) --> China mine collapses in heavy rain
A lead and zinc mine in eastern China has caved in due to heavy rain and threatens to contaminate a popular lake, in the latest of a series of flood-related disasters.

A river feeding Zhejiang's Qiandao Lake - one of the province's major tourist attractions - has turned grey after slag from the collapsed mine leaked out, the Xinhua news agency said.

...

PPS. I see in one of the photos I see a certain bearded gent lying in the water... His bottom half seems very white... It's hard to see clearly in the photo, but, he wasn't paddling 'bareback', was he? :o

No, grey water here - quite the contrary with it about as clean as one could expect. No one brought their water monitoring test kit but to be safe we all follow the golden rule & try to keep out mouths & eyes shut when going into the drink. ;)

I'm sure we'll find a way to get you out on one of these expeditions.

You'll want to click on that last image since its a video of David going over a dam. Aside from his canoe, we didn't see any bare bottoms on this outing. :o

Man Completes 44-Day Voyage Down Grand Canal

Postby Xiaoshan Paddler on Tue Jul 27, 2010 6:18 pm

Thought this worthy of a mention even if the reporter doesn't know the difference between a canoe & kayak.

A man has arrived in Hangzhou by canoe after 44 days spent paddling along the Grand Canal from Beijing.

Cheng Peng, 36, from Nanjing in Jiangsu province, started his more than 1700 kilometer-long voyage on June 12 and arrived in Hangzhou on Monday.

Cheng hoped to increase awareness of the necessity to safeguard the Grand Canal – which is the world's largest man-made waterway - and he also wishes to help its bid to be included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Looks awesome (the OP). Hope I can join in on the fun next expedition, if I'm not camp counselor-ing.

Yes, its a lot of fun! I was born on the water & never could live without it.

Better get in line if you want to grab a slot on the next outing. We need a few more people here who plan to be in the area for a while to get their own equipment so we have more paddlers in the mix. These plastic kayaks I have can be bought on the cheap but its the means to get it out to the water that will cost you!
